Raising alpacas is definitely not the norm around here.  When most people find out that’s what we do their incredulous response is usually “Alpacas!  Why Alpacas?”  Raising alpacas is definitely "out of the box" and many people can’t understand why we would want to take on such a venture, but it actually makes a lot of sense!

We were looking for a business opportunity that would offer us some flexibility and that we could run from our house.  I didn't want to be stuck in an office or store all day and I was attracted to the "lifestyle" that rasing alpacas offered.   I love being outside and animals have always been an important part of my life.    I knew it would be fulfilling to raise and sell livestock and alpacas appealed to me because the industry is not based upon a terminal (slaughter) business model in order to be profitable. The alpaca industry has a promising future based on the fiber.  The agriculture tax considerations help offset risk which in turn keeps the agriculture industry sound and productive.

Compared to other forms of livestock, alpacas are very "green". They don't require much land.   One acre is sufficient for 6 alpacas.  They need some form of shelter from the elements, fresh clean water, good grass hay and a handful of supplements to fill most of their basic needs.  They usually relieve themselves in a communal dung pile making clean-up much easier than with other forms of livestock.  Their poop has very little smell  and as a bonus  makes a great soil supplement that makes things grow organically! They have soft pads rather than hooves which make them gentle on the land.  They are fairly small, gentle and easy to handle which greatly reduces the potential for injury to even small children. They are recognized by the UN as one of the most sustainable domesticted animals in the world.

When we first got into raising alpacas they were simply a business plan. These strange animals with exquisite fiber would help make us money.  What I didn’t count on was falling completely in love with these beautiful, exotic creatures.  I had no idea how amazing alpacas were or how they would enrich my life.

There is an energy they give off that puts me in this peaceful state.  No matter how stressed I am during the day a visit to the barn and spending time with these gentle and calm animals relaxes me and puts life in a better perspective.  These animals make me laugh.  They can be so silly and their faces are so expressive. I love their gentle humming and yes, at times even their spitting!  You always know what an alpaca is thinking.  I love their cat like personalities which is a combination of curiosity and shyness, and when you gain an alpaca’s trust there is such a special bond.  I often finish up my barn chores and just sit there losing track of time as I observe these wondrous and interesting animals.

Why Alpacas?  It just makes sense.  Alpacas produce the finest fiber that makes the most beautiful, softest and warmest products in the world and they are truly a joy to raise.   They make me happy. That’s why.
